HOV Lanes

High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes are free, fast and available to motorists with two or more passengers in their vehicles.

You will know it when you see it

HOV lanes have a diamond pavement marking and are located in the far left lane. You’ll find them in both directions on U.S. 95 between Rainbow Boulevard and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

HOV lanes reduce congestion by limiting the number of vehicles allowed in the diamond lane. By only allowing high-occupancy vehicles in an HOV lane, demand for the lane is kept below capacity and means traffic is able to move more smoothly.

Vehicles allowed in the HOV lanes during hours of operation

  • Cars or light trucks with two or more passengers, including the driver
  • Vanpools
  • Motorcycles
  • Transit vehicles
hov hoursHybrid vehicles only qualify if they have two or more passengers, including the driver. Pets and mannequins do not pass as passengers, but humans of any age from
one-day to 100 years qualify as passengers. Penalties for illegal HOV usage are high and fines start at $300.

Hours of operation
HOV lanes are restricted to high-occupancy travel Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and during the afternoon rush from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Getting in and out
HOV lanes are accessible throughout their entire distance. You can enter and exit an HOV lane at any point along the solid white line.
